Sushi Instructions

Supplies:

  • Polymer clay in orange, pink, white, translucent, black,  garnet or deep red, olive
  • Balsa Wood
  • Delta/Ceramcoat SoftTints Waterbased Gloss Glaze
  • Gold Clear Glass Beads
  • Tacky Glue
  • Round Toothpicks
  • Old Eyeshadow Trays
  • White School Glue
Directions:

I used balsa wood for the sushi platter and cut a strip about 1 1/4" x 4 1/2".  Cut two slivers of balsa wood or you could use toothpicks to glue underneath to "rise" the platter just slightly off the bottom.

Then, I took Polymer Clay in several colors and began to "make" the sushi.

Red + translucent into a small cane (looks like a log) then pressed flat and cut became tuna.

Orange + translucent into a small cane then pressed flat and cut became salmon.

White + translucent same size underneath is the pad of rice for both the tuna and salmon.  Press a little and then bake for 10 min at 250 degrees.  Let cool.

I then glued the sushi to the platter.  Let dry.  I glazed the finished product with Delta/Ceramcoat SoftTints Waterbased Gloss Glaze and let dry.

I created the salmon roe (fish eggs) by taking gold glass beads and making small piles with tacky glue.  Roll out black Polymer Clay flat and wrap around the beads with the beads sticking out of the top...bake at 250 for 10 min...let cool, then glue to the platter.

Mixed white + translucent together then put in a garlic press that I got from the dollar store and as the mix is being pressed through the garlic press take a knife or I have a X-acto knife and cut off slivers.

Removed old eyeshadows and pried the metal tins out of the bottom...then filled the tin with the slivers of white + translucent that I cut from the garlic press...bake at 350 for 10 min. As it cools, I put some white school glue over the final product.  It becomes rice in a bowl, so to speak.

Then, I made the California rolls by making a small cane of orange and a small cane of green.  Then pressed them together and then a rolled out flat sheet of translucent and wrapped it around the green and orange cane.  Cut very thin slices and it became the California roll.  Again, I baked for 10 min. in a 250 degree oven.  Let them cool and glue 6 together, 3 pieces x 2 pieces.

Tuna rolls were made with a tiny cane of red + translucent mixed, then wrapped in a flat sheet of translucent followed by a flat sheet of black around.  Cut into small slices and baked as above.   Let them cool and glue 6 together, 3 pieces x 2 pieces.

For the Wasabi (horseradish), I mixed olive and white Polymer Clay, limiting the white until the green was darker than pastel green but not so dark that it would appear olive.  Molded into a tiny triangular shape.  Bake as above and glue just one to the platter.

For the Ginger, I used pink Polymer Clay.  I made a small ball and then using the exacto knife, I "peeled" the sides down, almost into a rose petal look.  Baked as above.  Then, glued one to the platter.

For the chopsticks, I cut a round toothpick in half and placed them one over top of each other on the platter.

I did put a light coat of craft glaze over top of all the pieces to give a more realistic look to the sushi.

You could also use a small glue cap, like the one on many craft glue bottles for a saki cup.  I also spray painted a small tea cup in gold for additional interest on the platter.

Tips:

Tip -  Bake on a 1' x 1' white baking tile to prevent one side from becoming too shiny.

Tip - Use a tissue blade or a razor blade to cut the polymer clay cleanly.
