Miniature Vintage Fashion Doll Boxes:

Materials:

  • Vintage repro keychain box
  • Glue
  • Exacto Knife
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • White posterboard
Directions:
  1. Cut the keychain box apart at the seams. Discard the keychain or give it as a gift.
  2. One keychain box will yield ten miniature doll boxes.
  3. Four will have a silver back. Six will have a white back.
  4. The ones with the white background wil be slightly larger.
  5. Cut the keychain box apart between the rows of vintage images in a straight line horizontally.
  6. Flatten the pieces out.
Directions for the Silver Box (third item from the left in the picture above):
  1. Cut the silver images apart horizontally between the rows of the vintage outfits.
  2. The silver background pieces will be cut in half between Gay Parisianne and Winter Holiday on the top row and the Swimsuit and Picnic Set on the bottom row.
  3. You'll have to use the Exacto knife to score lightly on the BACK of these pieces three lines. They should be equidistant.
  4. You should end up seeing a three-fold image of the silver background pieces. Hence, they tri-fold will be the front and the two sides of the box.
  5. Cut four pieces of white posterboard the exact same size as the silver background pieces.
  6. Carefully score the white posterboard the same way, on the back in three lines, equidistant. You'll end up with a box bottom to fit under the silver box top.
  7. Glue these pieces together like you would see a shoebox close.
  8. You'll still have an open top and bottom.
  9. Using the box top or bottom, trace a square onto the white cardboard.
  10. You'll make two of these...which become the box top and box bottom.
  11. Glue the top and bottom into place.
  12. This miniature vintage box will NOT open. It is a "display only" item.
Directions for the White Background Box (second item from the left and last item on the right in the picture above):
  1. Cut the vintage images horizontal between the rows of vintage outfits.
  2. You'll have six pieces.
  3. Flatten the pieces out.
  4. You'll have to use the Exacto knife to score lightly on the BACK of these pieces three lines. They should be equidistant.
  5. You should end up seeing a three-fold image of the silver background pieces. Hence, they tri-fold will be the front and the two sides of the box.
  6. Cut four pieces of white posterboard the exact same size as the silver background pieces.
  7. Carefully score the white posterboard the same way, on the back in three lines, equidistant. You'll end up with a box bottom to fit under the silver box top.
  8. Glue these pieces together like you would see a shoebox close.
  9. You'll still have an open top and bottom.
  10. Using the box top or bottom, trace a square onto the white cardboard.
  11. You'll make two of these...which become the box top and box bottom.
  12. Glue the top and bottom into place.
  13. This miniature vintage box will NOT open. It is a "display only" item.

Modern Doll Box

Materials for Modern Doll Box (sixth image from the left in the picture above):
  • Glue
  • Exacto Knife
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • White posterboard or discarded doll box cardboard
Directions for Modern Doll Box:
  1. Find images for the front of the item you desire. I save them to a disk either in .jpg or .gif format. I found all these images on the internet.
  2. Using Microsoft Greeting Card Workshop, I imported the pictures into the program for making a "flyer".
  3. Import one image.
  4. Reduce the size of the image. This is tricky. You'll have to play around with the dimensions and print a few out until you get the hang of how much reducing you have to do to achieve the correct dimension.
  5. Copy the image for as many boxes as you wish to make. You'll need only one image for each doll box you make. (a front)
  6. Print the "flyer" out.
  7. Cut out the images.
  8. Using the image cut out a piece of cardboard that is five times as wide as the image.
  9. Carefully score the cardboard with five equidistant lines on the back. You'll end up with a box shape and a flap to fold into the box shape, minus the top and bottom.
  10. Glue the flap to the inside of the box.
  11. You'll still have an open top and bottom.
  12. Using the box top or bottom, trace a square onto the white cardboard.
  13. You'll make two of these...which become the box top and box bottom.
  14. Glue the top and bottom into place.
  15. Glue the printed image of the doll box front to the front of the box.
  16. You can even use a piece of the clear plastic from the discarded doll box to "cover" the color image to give that illusion of the clear window front.

Miniature Dolls

Materials for the Miniature Dolls (two items in the front row of the picture in the plastic):
  • Small miniature dolls (those shown are from the "I Dream of Jeanie" television series)
  • Plastic Sandwich Bag

Directions:
  1. Cut a piece of the sandwich bag about 2" x 3/4".
  2. Place the small doll on half of the plastic.
  3. Run line of glue along the outer inside edges of the plastic.
  4. Seal the plastic shut over the doll, matching the edges of the plastic.
  5. Let the plastic bag dry.
  6. Cut out a small square of the white sticker.
  7. Write a "price" with the marker.
  8. Stick the tag to the front of the plastic bag, so as not to block the small doll.
